🇲🇦 AZILAL TRIBE
The given name of these rugs, the Azilal is named after the Berber people from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. This group consists of 17 different tribes. The everyday roles of these Berber descendants were primarily shepherds and goat herders who migrated with their wandering herds from one grazing land to another, higher and higher up in the mountainside. What all the tribes had in similarity is their genius ability to create rugs, which are indeed all similar. This was the starting mark for the origins of the Beni Ourain rugs that we all grew to love in this modern day and age. It was noted that with every tribe, there were slight and subtle differences in the features of design and color of these rugs according to the time and tribes. For example, all natural dyes or no dyes are used at all in the techniques of making these handwoven rugs. The most important element of the Azilal carpets is the high quality wool that are produced by the sheep in this region of the Atlas Mountains. It is this superior wool that produces the most deluxe quality that we know as the Beni Ourain rugs.
These rugs are deeply rooted by tradition, not only by location of the Atlas Mountains as the region where these handwoven pile rugs came from, but the action of handweaving the Beni Ourain rugs is practiced within individual families. Typically they are handwoven by the Berber women and the knowledge and techniques are handed down from mother to daughter later in life. The elements used in the design of the rugs tell the story of the weaver's life. For example the major life events of the women, birth and fertility are recorded during the process of weaving the rug. In turn the themes of nature, femininity, rural life and religious beliefs are conveyed through symbols and particular designs that are meaningful to only the weaver almost like a code into her life.
Some weavers too have superstitious beliefs. It is their belief that the rugs themselves are their protectors and guards against evil spirits so they intentionally create lucky charm symbols and ceremony symbolism according to the practices of their tribe. The different designs and details of a rug tells the stories of the tribal ancestors. In these rural regions these things are clearly a strong aspect of their culture.
